From crypto to SEPA transfer: steps, real costs and pitfalls

Turning crypto into euros to pay rent or an invoice by SEPA transfer takes only a few steps. The real cost hides in the details: the stated fee, the spread in the rate, network fees. Here is the full path, and the mistakes that cost the most.

Key points

  • The path: one asset and one network, a deposit address, confirmations, a firm price, then a SEPA transfer credited by the next business day at the latest.
  • Conversion fees and network fees are separate. USDT follows the US dollar, so its euro value changes with the exchange rate.
  • Crypto sent on the wrong network may be lost permanently: check the asset and the network before every deposit.
  • Above €1,000 from a self-hosted wallet, you must prove that it belongs to you (EU Transfer of Funds Regulation).
  • Converting may be taxable in your country of tax residence: keep every quote and every receipt.

How crypto to SEPA transfer works

A SEPA transfer only carries euros. To pay a landlord, a supplier or a contractor from your crypto, you first convert it into euros on an account with an IBAN, then send the transfer from that account. Your payee never handles crypto: they receive euros.

Three roles are involved. The blockchain carries your crypto to the deposit address. A crypto-asset service provider (CASP), authorised or notified under MiCA, exchanges it for euros. A payment or e-money institution holds the account and executes the transfer.

The MiCA transitional period ended on 1 July 2026: any provider offering these services in the EU must now be authorised (art. 59) or notified (art. 60). Before depositing anything, look up its name in ESMA’s interim MiCA register.

The steps, from your wallet to your payee’s account

A typical path has seven steps; only the first is a one-off.

Each CryptoIBAN deposit starts at $500. Send the exact amount requested by the current payment modal; a smaller test transfer does not complete that payment.

  1. Activate your account. Enter your first and last name, then make an initial deposit of at least $500. Your IBAN is usable once the payment is confirmed.
  2. Choose the asset and network. CryptoIBAN accepts USDT on Tron (TRC20) or Ethereum (ERC20), BTC on Bitcoin, ETH on Ethereum, and SOL on Solana. USDC and EURC deposits are unavailable.
  3. Copy the deposit address from the interface, never by hand, then check it.
  4. Send from your wallet, selecting exactly the network shown with the address.
  5. Wait for confirmations. How long they take depends on the network; the deposit then appears in your account.
  6. Accept the quote. The firm price, the fees and the exact euro amount are shown before you confirm the conversion.
  7. Send the SEPA transfer with the payee’s name, IBAN and the reference they expect: invoice, rent or tax notice.

The real costs: fees, spread, network fees

Comparing two services on their percentage fee alone is misleading: some costs appear on no price list. The right question is simple: how much crypto do you send, and how many euros reach your payee?

The least visible item is the spread: the gap between the price you get and the market rate at the same moment. A service can advertise “0% fees” and earn its margin on that gap. MiCA requires a provider exchanging crypto-assets for euros to publish its fees (art. 66(4)), its price or pricing method with any limits (art. 77(2)), and to execute your order at the price displayed when it becomes final (art. 77(3)).

Network fees pay for the blockchain transaction and are paid separately from the quoted deposit amount. USDT aims to track the US dollar, so converting it into euros includes dollar/euro exchange-rate exposure.

At CryptoIBAN, our pricing is published: the conversion costs 1% all-in, with no spread hidden in the rate, and each SEPA transfer, €0. The simulator’s indicative rate comes from the public price on a major exchange (Kraken); the firm price appears before you confirm anything.

Three points to check: network, amount and price

The network. CryptoIBAN accepts USDT on Tron (TRC20) or Ethereum (ERC20), BTC on Bitcoin, ETH on Ethereum, and SOL on Solana. USDC and EURC deposits are unavailable. The asset and network must match the current payment instructions.

The amount. Choose at least $500 in dollars. The modal gives the exact amount in crypto. Pay network fees separately so that the full amount arrives, and complete the payment before its expiry.

Volatility. The price of BTC, ETH or SOL can move sharply between the moment you send and the moment you confirm the conversion: only the firm price on the quote counts. For a fixed due date such as rent, converting ahead of time and keeping a reserve in euros means you never have to convert in a hurry. Stablecoins reduce this risk without removing it, since their price can also drift from the reference currency.

Before each transfer, check the asset, the network and the address. If in doubt, do not confirm.

The SEPA transfer: timing, payee check, what your payee sees

Once the euros are in your account, the SEPA transfer works like any other. It can go to any of the 41 countries in the SEPA schemes and must be credited by the end of the next business day at the latest (Payment Services Directive, art. 83). Count in business days: a weekend or a public holiday adds time.

Before sending, the name you enter is compared with the IBAN holder’s: this is Verification of Payee, required in the euro area by Regulation (EU) 2024/886 (art. 5c) since 9 October 2025. You can still choose to send, but any answer other than a match deserves a check with your payee.

Your payee sees the name of the sending account holder and its IBAN, as with any SEPA transfer. Within the EU, the country of your IBAN is not a lawful reason for them to refuse your payment (Regulation (EU) 260/2012, art. 9). Always include the reference they expect, so they can match your payment to the invoice or the rent.

Finally, once executed, a transfer cannot be cancelled on your side: if you make a mistake, the only option is a recall request, with no certainty of success.

Tax points to keep in mind

Converting crypto into euros is not tax-neutral: depending on your country of tax residence, a conversion can be taxable. Belgium, for example, has applied a 10% tax since 1 January 2026 to the capital gains its residents realise on financial assets, crypto included.

The country of your IBAN changes nothing here: a Belgian IBAN does not change your tax residence. Tax residents of France must also declare accounts opened abroad (form 3916, and 3916-bis for digital-asset accounts). Finally, the DAC8 directive has required crypto providers to collect data for tax authorities since 1 January 2026.

The useful habit: keep every quote, statement and transfer receipt, with the date and the rate applied. These documents do not replace tax advice, but they make each transaction easy to reconstruct. If you live abroad, our guide to expat crypto tax reporting covers your obligations.

Checklist before your first conversion

Before converting to meet a due date, take five minutes for these checks.

Enter your first and last name, then make an initial deposit of at least $500. Your IBAN is usable once the payment is confirmed.

  • The provider appears in ESMA’s register, and you know who provides which service.
  • The asset and network of your transfer exactly match the deposit address.
  • The exact crypto amount from the payment modal can arrive in full, with network fees paid separately.
  • You have read the quote: firm price, fees, exact amount in euros.
  • The payee’s name, IBAN and reference have been checked.
  • The due date leaves time for confirmations and one business day for the transfer.
  • Your receipts are downloaded and filed.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take from deposit to euros in the payee’s account?

It depends mostly on the network: allow for the confirmations, then the conversion when you confirm the quote; the SEPA transfer is then credited by the next business day at the latest. SEPA Instant transfers are not offered by CryptoIBAN at this time.

Can I pay someone in crypto directly to their IBAN?

No. An IBAN receives euros, not crypto-assets: the conversion always happens before the transfer, and your payee receives a standard SEPA transfer.

Will my payee know the money comes from crypto?

Your recipient sees a SEPA transfer in euros, the account holder’s name, its IBAN and the payment reference. Enter your first and last name accurately and use the reference requested by your recipient.

Which asset should I use to pay an expense in euros?

The available assets are USDT, BTC, ETH and SOL. USDT follows the US dollar; BTC, ETH and SOL fluctuate with the market. Review the current euro conversion quote and fees before confirming.

What if I sent crypto on the wrong network?

Contact the provider’s support straight away, with the transaction ID (hash). The funds may be lost permanently and no recovery can be promised: a confirmed transaction cannot be reversed.
