Everyday bills

Pay bills with crypto, on time and with the right reference.

Paying bills with crypto means sending each creditor a SEPA transfer in euros, from a Belgian IBAN in your own name, with the reference that lets them match your payment.

  • Any creditor with an IBAN
  • Your customer reference included
  • One receipt per bill

The reference, bill by bill

Pay bills with crypto: which reference to use?

Your creditor matches each transfer to your account through the reference. It appears on the bill, usually next to the IBAN to pay.

Bill Reference to enter Where to find it
Energy: electricity, gas Customer or contract number At the top of the bill or on the payment schedule
Telecoms: mobile, internet Account or line number On the monthly bill
Insurance: home, health, car Contract or policy number On the premium notice
School fees Pupil’s name and invoice number On the school’s invoice
Medical: clinic, practitioner Invoice or file number On the fee note

Copy the reference exactly, digits, letters and symbols included: one character too many or too few can delay the allocation of your payment.

Fixed amounts

A fixed monthly amount? Schedule it once

A monthly energy instalment, an internet plan, an insurance premium paid monthly: when the amount does not change, a scheduled transfer goes out on the day you choose, with the same reference.

For a variable bill, such as a year-end adjustment or medical fees, send a one-off transfer when it arrives instead. Either way, the payee name is checked before sending.

Just make sure enough euros are in the account before each scheduled date.

Organisation

One monthly routine for all your bills

Amounts change from month to month; the method stays the same.

  1. List what is due

    Start of the month

At the start of the month, note each bill’s amount, deadline, IBAN and reference.

  2. Convert in one go

    Price shown upfront

Deposit and convert the month’s total: one quote to check, and network fees paid once rather than on every deposit.

  3. Send before the deadline

    By next business day

A SEPA transfer is credited by the next business day at the latest: send at least one business day before each deadline.

  4. File the receipts

    End of the month

Each transfer has a PDF receipt, and the monthly statement sums it all up. Handy if a reminder arrives.

Before you send

Good habits, and mistakes to avoid

Do

  • Take the IBAN from the bill or your customer account
  • Copy the reference as it is
  • Pay each bill with its own transfer
  • Keep the receipt until the next bill

Avoid

  • Paying an IBAN received by email without checking it
  • Grouping two bills under one reference
  • Converting the day before a deadline
  • Ignoring a “no match” result on the name

Questions about paying bills

My supplier insists on direct debit. What can I do?

CryptoIBAN works with SEPA transfers that you send yourself. Ask your supplier whether you can pay by transfer, and note the IBAN and reference to use. If the amount is fixed, you can then schedule the transfer.

Can I pay a bill issued in another country?

Yes, if the creditor has an IBAN in one of the 41 SEPA countries. Within the EU, they cannot refuse your transfer because of the country of your IBAN (Regulation 260/2012, art. 9).

Does the creditor receive the exact amount of the bill?

Yes. The 1% fee applies to the conversion, not to the transfer, which costs €0. The euro amount you send is the amount that arrives.

I forgot the reference. What now?

Contact the creditor with the PDF receipt: the date, the amount and your name let them trace the payment. Once executed, the transfer can no longer be cancelled on your side.

Is there a minimum amount per bill?

Yes, €10 per transfer. A phone bill goes through without any trouble.

Can I pay a child’s school fees?

Yes, if the school has an IBAN in the SEPA area. Enter the pupil’s name and the invoice number as the reference, and keep the receipt for the school file.
